Thames Valley Parkway, river bridges and London history

Arrive by bike on the Thames Valley Parkway

The multi-use Thames Valley Parkway is the park’s defining feature and a practical transportation route, not just a recreational loop. It links the north branch of the river to Western University and the wider London cycling network. A public bike repair station near the Grosvenor Street parking area includes tools and a pump.

A park for children, adults and older visitors

Gibbons Park has paved paths, two play structures, swings, three tennis courts, picnic facilities, washrooms and seasonal water recreation. River bridges create scenic route choices, while benches and broad lawns make the outing workable for different ages and energy levels.

George Gibbons and the Boundary Waters Treaty

The park’s namesake, London lawyer George C. Gibbons, was the chief Canadian negotiator for the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty. The agreement between the United States and Great Britain created a framework for preventing and resolving disputes over waters along the Canada–United States boundary and established the International Joint Commission.

River safety and route planning

The Thames River and low sections of the pathway can rise quickly after storms or snowmelt. Obey closures, keep away from fast water and plan a signed detour when the path is flooded. Cyclists should slow near playgrounds, bridges and busy shared-path areas.
